What is a Traditional Irish Session?
An Irish
Traditional Music Session is an exuberantly fun
gathering of Irish traditional musicians where there
are active participating musicians, listening
musicians who are learning the repertoire, and often
there is an enthusiastic audience. Irish Traditional
Sessions are somewhat informal. The songs are Irish
dance tunes written a few hundred years ago and passed
down through generations. Tunes include: hornpipes,
jigs, reels, and slip-jigs. Session musicians may
string tunes together, one right into another, to form
sets. Each melody is typically repeated three times.
Wonderful things happen at sessions: when the music
gets going, toes start tapping and people start
enjoying the joyful melodies. Sometimes a person might
be moved by the music such that he or she will get up
and start spontaneously doing Irish traditional
dancing. We musicians are always honored when our
music inspires people!
